Seen by tens of millions of viewers since it entered the Art Institute's collection in 1924, the painting is an icon and a destination in itself for visitors. This exhibition of approximately 130 paintings and works on paper will at once celebrate and shed new light on Georges Seurat’s masterpiece, bringing together approximately 45 of the artist’s paintings and drawings related to the picture—from rich, yet delicate, conté crayon studies to oil sketches on small wood panels to nearly full-size paintings. DISCOVER CUNEO MANSION AND HISTORIC LONG GROVE

Visit one of the most elegant mansion estates in the Chicago area along with a tiny restored town of the 1800s filled with shopping delights. The Cuneo Museum and Gardens, built in 1914, was owned by John F. Cuneo, a prominent Chicago printing executive, philanthropist and gentleman farmer. Your docent guided tour will focus on the Venetian style architecture, elaborate furnishings and opulent grounds.

A 40 foot high great hall with arcaded balconies, skylighted ceiling and a grand staircase is breathtaking. Noteworthy are the double formal dining rooms, private chapel with exquisite stained glass windows and the wonderful frescoed ceilings. You will enjoy seeing fine old master paintings, 17th century tapestries, a custom made gilt grand piano, and an outstanding collection of oriental rugs, sculpture and silver. The estate includes 75 serene acres with lakes, fountains, formal gardens, antique classical statuary, a private 9-hold golf course, and a conservatory. Cuneo was featured in the movie “My Best Friend’s Wedding”.

You will then continue on to the picturesque village of Long Grove which was settled in the early 1800s by a group of German farmers. The country church and Village Tavern, first established in 1847, have remained in continuous operation. During the 1920s and 1930s when larger cities were being built, this quaint, old-fashioned town remained untouched by progress. During the 1940s a revival of the past took place and some forty shops and restaurants evolved.

The day in Long Grove will be spent browsing and shopping in elegant little stores, charming boutiques, and incredible antique emporia. Lunch is included and will be served at Seasons, a wonderful Long Grove restaurant.
